{Organization: Where do I start?}

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

Attributed to Ben Franklin

This past weekend I had the privilege of hearing Vicki Bentley speak at the Christian Homeschooling Association of Pennsylvania’s (CHAP)  annual convention. Her session ORGANIZED: Well, almost (Time Management for Busy Moms) caught my attention because Mrs. Bentley is mother to eight daughters. She has fostered over 50 children and since 1988, she has homeschooled a total of 17 kids.

Now that is amazing! I want to hear how exactly she manages her home, her time, and her children…

Although Mrs. Bentley’s session was for the Homeschooling audience, her tips will help any busy mom, both the working and the stay at home…

Lucky for you, I took some notes {smile}. Here’s just a bit of what I gleaned.

  • Pray. Seek God and find out what He wants you to work on for your family. Every family is different. What works for one family may not work for another.
  • Organization is about STUFF and TIME. Less stuff= more time.
  • Identify what’s important and then order your day to reflect that.

5 Key Questions

Mrs. Bentley advised the mothers in the audience to ask themselves 5 key questions.

      1. What’s is working (and why?)
      2. What’s NOT working? (laundry, meal planning, filing, organizing, the kids, bills, personal maintenance, etc.)
      3. What items are most essential to you?
      4. Why do you want to get organized?
      5. What’s causing the problem? (technical errors? external realities? psychological obstacles?)

I believe many times we don’t see change because we don’t take the time to sit and look at the problem head on. We ignore. We walk away. We settle. Mrs. Bentley’s Key Questions helps us get the ball rolling. So go ahead, find out what’s working, what’s not, and then ask the Lord to give you creativity and strategies to bring order. You can do this!!

I’d love to hear from you! What tips and tricks do you have when it comes to organization?
