{Week 3: God’s Solution To Debt– GIVE! }

It’s Monday….and we are still on our most amazing journey towards FINANCIAL FREEDOM!!!! Doesn’t that sound lovely? I mean really… say it with me…. D-E-B-T F-R-E-E-D-O-M!!!!!

I don’t know about you, but for me- having this study on Mondays (especially during the Christmas season) grounds me to reality. It helps me to shift my focus from all the ‘stuff’ and place it on the One who provides for the stuff. This Christmas I want to share with you a principle that sounds like such an oxymoron, but if you bear with me for a few minutes, you too will see things a bit differently.

Did you catch that? I know it doesn’t make sense. And believe you me- most secular accountants would disagree with me on this, but God’s word tells me different. My Pastors have taught us so much about the act of giving and we currently went through a new study on this particular topic of giving. One thing that continues to jump out of God’s word is the blessing that comes with giving.

Proverbs 11:24 (NIV),

“One person gives freely, yet gains even more;   another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”

Luke 6:38 (NIV),

” Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

John 3:16 (NIV),

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

We were in debt to the Creator of this world. As a matter of fact, take a look at your current financial debt. Does it overwhelm you? Are you $5000, $10000, $100000 in debt? Does it seem like you will never get out of that debt? Does your burden of debt weigh so heavy upon you that you just cannot imagine life without it? Has dreaming about the freedom of a debt free life ceased in your life? Have you given in to your debt?

What if I told you that the debt of sin in your life was eternally more grand than the current financial debt you are experiencing? What if I told you that your sin actually had you bankrupt? This debt, the debt whose only payment resulted in judgement of our souls unto death, this debt is far greater than any debt caused by our financial irresponsibility. Now THAT is a somber thought!

So this is the part where we can learn a whole lot from God about debt. God’s solution for the debt of this world was ‘giving’!! How awesome is that? He gave one Son in order to gain a world of sons and daughters. It was the ultimate gift. The most priceless and valued gift of all… His one and only Son. He didn’t have to do it. Yet it pleased Him to do so.

In His infinite wisdom, God knew that giving would result in an abundant harvest. He knew that in order to gain, He had to first sacrifice that which He loved. How beautiful. How extreme. How totally amazing! His love for me, for us… His concern with our un-payable debt. He cared about my greatest debt long before I even came to exist!

One quiet night, long ago,  Jesus left his glory in heaven and became flesh to dwell among us in a poor and stinky stable. That night a multitude of angels filled the sky with song:

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill towards men!” (Luke 2:14).

That night my world changed. That night your destiny changed. That night, the means and provision for payment of our sins had entered time. Soon enough, Jesus would grow up and walk that lonely road on Calvary and He’d become “the propitiation for our sins and not only for our sins but also for the whole world, (1 John 2:2)”.

He gave much and He reaped greatly!

{LET US DO THE SAME}As we go into this Christmas Season, let us keep the true meaning of Christmas at the forefront of our minds. Let us not get so caught us in our plan to become Debt Free or (the opposite) in our lack of responsibility with our finances that we forget that God’s demonstration of love is a life lesson for us (on so many levels).

On this journey towards Debt Freedom, let us use His example to help form in us an attitude and heart of generosity. As we plan, and save, and budget, because yes- these are all a part of being good stewards, let us give freely. Let us look to our Father as the ultimate example of generosity! Let us look to Him as the ultimate example of a solution to get out of debt!

He paid a debt you could not pay on your own. What makes you think your financial debt is to great for Him? Just a thought!

Please stop by and share your own testimony of God’s faithfulness in your life!

Don’t forget to stop by and let me know how it’s going for you? Are you excited? Are you overwhelmed? Are you on your own journey to {Financial Freedom}? I would love to hear from you!
