{Checklist for Life: Week 7- The Envelope, Please. [Success]…}

We are now on week 7 of our  Checklist for Life, book study. And let me just say… ‘thank you’. The fact that you are coming back week after week to join me continues to amaze me. The fact that you desire to open the gap of communication with your children continues to bless my heart greatly. In today’s culture, we have a lot of disconnected youth. They are so accustomed to having ‘other things’ taking up their attention that they can rarely even have a decent conversation.

It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children how to navigate through life. Taking the time to sit with them and review what the Bible has to say about different topics is essential…Even on days when it’s the last thing they want to do. I encourage you- if they whine, if they complain, if they rather do something else… continue to press on. You have a responsibility and you will be accountable to God for it. Eventually, they will learn to appreciate the time and effort you are sowing into their lives!

This week topic is {Success}.

I don’t know about you, but my ideas of {Success} have drastically changed throughout the years.

As a matter of fact, this week while reading through the word of God and contemplating the consequences I’ve had to deal with because of past sin, I repented all over again. Why did I not obey God as  a teen? Why was it that I chose to do things my way? Why didn’t I know God like I do now? Thank God for forgiveness, redemption, and favor!!

Today, I am sure that success comes not with money, education, or influence… these are great and can help some- but reality is that all of this means nothing if God is not with you in these. All of these are empty pursuits leading to dead-end roadways- empty and lonely. My desire is to instruct my children to know what the word says about {Success} God’s way. So let’s find out.

{READ} first things first… let’s check out God’s word. What does God’s word say about {SUCCESS}?

  • Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established.”
  • Proverbs 15:22, “Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established.
  • Joshua 1:8, “The Lord said to Joshua, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
  • Psalm 1:2-3, “His delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

Well, as you can see, God’s word has a lot to say about {Success}. Download your FREE  {Scripture Memory Cards on Success} (<—–simply click link)

Here’s a tip: I cut these out and laminated them. I then bought loose leaf book rings at STAPLES (office supply store), punched a hole through them and now my kids can study the verses anytime without losing any of the scripture cards (especially helpful when reviewing while on the road).

I had my son answer several questions which I had him answer one at a time before I would give him the next question.

  1. What is your idea of success? (to which he answered) “Getting a good education and getting a high paying job.”
  2. What is God’s idea of success? His answer reflected what was found in the verses read above. Obeying God and following His path pretty much sums it up.
  3. Is your idea of success and God’s idea of success in alignment?
  4. What can we do to bring the two into alignment?

We discussed the futility of pursuing plans outside of Gods will. If we are to get the desires of our hearts then we must seek God first.

{Round table discussion}

  • Answers to the questions above.
  • Going through the verses one at a time to see what he got out of them.
  • Importance of seeking God first and allowing God to establish your plans
  • Importance of prayer in seeking God’s direction.
  • Importance of repentance for our futile pursuits.

This week’s study reminded us that {Success} in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of God are two very distinct things. The world’s idea of success yields things which are temporary, things we cannot take to eternity with us. God’s idea of success leads us on a path through which we reap eternal rewards and pleasures. I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty exciting!

We ended the discussion with prayer.

(pg. 48 in the book)

This chapter is so important because kids now-a-days have such a distorted view on what brings pleasure. We live in a “relative” society where “whatever I think is right is right”. Teens feel like they know it all and that they will live life how they want to and in the end they will reap the results they’ve been dreaming of……WHAT A LIE OF THE ENEMY!

Teaching them what God says in His word makes things black and white. If you choose this…. this will happen. Simply sitting on the verse in Joshua 1:8, we can see that God is serious about what is written in His word.  Lingering on this verse alone with your kids will give them some great principles on {Success}.

“”The Lord said to Joshua, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

So go ahead, make this week one to remember… because whatever you teach them today will, in fact, play a huge role in your teens future! Be blessed and encouraged!

Send me your comments and let me know how it went for you. I want to hear about it! And get ready for next week’s topic, {VALUES}.
